July 8th, 2022. That was when the final episode of The Boys Season 3 aired. ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO? Man, it’s been a long wait.
Of course just as we’re getting all excited about season four, today Eric Kripke, who is breaking season five right now, dropped the bombshell that season five will be the last for the show! I guess I’m not surprised, but talk about timing an announcement. If we go another two years before a season release like this last time, then the end is still far off. Sounds like Jared only has one chance to score that role now!
Anyway, I digress, we are here to get stoked about season four. So what do we know about it? Here’s a synopsis about the overall season from Amazon Prime:
“In Season 4, the world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son and his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.”
Well, talk about being cagey. Let’s put it this way, s*** is about to get real. Of course, before we dig into what could happen in season four, we need to look back at where we left off with season three and Gen V since these events are very important for later.
Catching Up
Let’s see, can we remember what happened back in the season three finale? Here’s a summary:
- Maeve escapes from her confines at Vought because Ashley and The Deep are dumbasses. She ends up joining up with team Boys to plot revenge. Good thing Butcher and Soldier Boy both show up itching for revenge.
- Maeve, Butcher and Soldier Boy lock up the others, who objected to their plan, and go tearing off to Vought to end Homelander, who has already ended Black Noir because he kept the whole Soldier Boy is his Daddy secret from him all these years.
- Homelander tries to appeal to Soldier Boy by introducing Ryan, his grandson, and it almost works until Homelander gets emotional and Soldier Boy’s toxic masculinity can’t take it, calling his son a “pussy.” Thems fighting words! Soldier Boy bests Homelander in a big fight and goes after Ryan next.
- Things get a little fuzzy after this, aka one big brou-ha-ha. Butcher goes after Solider Boy to save Ryan, but is no match for the super supe. The rest of the gang arrives, naturally escaping their confines because they’re awesome. Starlight takes on Soldier Boy, Maeve takes on Homelander. Hughie (because he’s awesome and loves Starlight) cranks up the lights to 11 and Starlight finds a wicked new power. The more light she takes in, the more unstoppable she is! They gain control enough to dose Soldier Boy with Frenchie’s latest concoction which will basically make him explode in nuclear fashion. However, they lose control right when he’s ready to go off so Maeve, who has just about kicked the crap out of Homelander, takes off, grabs Soldier Boy and they go flying out the window together, both going up in flames when SB explodes in mid air.
- Fake out! The world thinks Maeve is dead, but we learn otherwise. She survived but lost her powers (an established Soldier Boy explosion side effect). She can finally go off to the country and live that lesbian quiet life that Vought tried so hard to exploit. A happy Maeve ending.
- Soldier Boy didn’t die either, but he ends up going back into cold storage. So, a possible Jensen Ackles return someday?
- We learn that Temp V is fatal and Billy Butcher now has one foot in the grave (aka, he’s dying!) Considering how much of an asshole Butcher is, that might be considered a happy ending too. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
- Since we know what show we’re watching, time for a father/son ending supe style. Homelander introduces Ryan as his son to the world. A Starlight supporter throws a plastic bottle and hits Ryan, so Homelander obliterates this guy to nothing with his laser eyes in front of the whole crowd. Naturally, the crowd starts chanting in support of Homelander and Ryan wryly smiles over his Dad’s act. Oh boy, a little too on the nose with today’s events?
We also know that the season resumes where things left off with the spinoff series Gen V. Turns out that Godolokin University was a front for experimenting on supes and not really trying to educate them. Dean Shetty, a human, was seeking revenge against supes since her husband and child were on the plane that Homelander and Maeve let crash rather than saving everyone way back in The Boys season one. A scientist in her lab invented a virus that could kill supes! Too bad the entire formula landed in the hands of Victoria Neuman, who exploded the scientist’s head after Dean Shetty was killed by the gone rogue Cate. There was a big brou-ha-ha (Kripke seems to love those) in the finale with a rebellion of the students against all the humans in the lab, with Homelander flying in, taking out the good guys and making the bad guys look like heroes. You know, a typical Homelander dick move.
Back to Season Four
Filming for season four actually finished in April 2023, but it was withheld thanks to the really long writer’s strike.
Also, Black Noir is gone since he’s dead, right? No! He’ll still be part of the seven, which could possibly happen since no one knew who was really behind the mask. Just get a new guy I guess? We’ll find out the story I suppose. Apparently actor Nathan Mitchell is still carrying on the role.
There are two familiar faces joining the season four cast, Rob Benedict and Jeffrey Dean Morgan! JDM’s role is especially going to be pivotal, and from what I heard at this past weekend’s Creation Con in Columbus, he is a total badass. That’s all we know though! The actors were very tight lipped about their roles. Also joining the team are Susan Heyward as Sister Sage and Valorie Curry as Firecracker. I’m assuming they’re new additions to the seven since season three ended with only five members remaining. Actually (counts supes on fingers), there were only four left, and that’s counting Black Noir! So just how many are in the seven again? I can never keep track.
Anyway, here’s an awesome video from Jeffrey Dean Morgan telling us all about his character, including his name and what he does in season four…sort of.
Finally, @jdmorgan shared more details about his character at #IGNLive. Or tried to at least. pic.twitter.com/n8WzBSMVJu

Okay, enough for now. Just get on with season four already? You’ll get your chance on Thursday, June 13th when Prime Video releases the first three episodes. I’ll have reviews here for each one of the episodes, so come back to see what my twisted mind thinks of this very twisted show. If it’s anything like season three, I’m going to be a loss for words at first.
